Tri Tech Overcomes Challenges in Biofuel Application with Rittal’s Flexible, Modular System

The Situation

One company in the biofuels industry was having challenges with a motor control center application and was seeking help. They needed a quick-turnaround system solution that met the following highly specific parameters:

  • No more than 70 inches in height
  • Could handle a large load demand
  • Met a certain number of safety requirements

The Customer’s Need

This company needed a flexible, modular baying system that met specific dimensions. They had not worked with Tri Tech before, but ended up being very glad they turned to us for help. Tri Tech has worked with Rittal products for five years, so when the customer called us for advice, it was a no brainer: we proposed a Rittal modular solution to meet all of their system requirements.

The Tri Tech Solution

Tri Tech took advantage of the Rittal Ri4Power TS 8 product offerings to achieve the successful integration that the customer needed. Specifying Rittal TS 8 modular enclosures met the project’s height constraints, and Tri Tech designed the system with standardized equipment in a variety of options and sizes to satisfy the load requirements. Because Rittal’s TS 8 modular enclosures are designed to be efficient, flexible, simple and safe, they enable greater productivity for the end customer. Tri Tech specified a range of equipment for the TS 8 enclosures including power monitoring, feeder breakers, dual feeder breakers, full-voltage non-reversing starters, 24VDC fans, Ethernet communication ports, and wiring, as well as custom arc flash relays.

“Being able to leverage the Rittal system and meet the customer’s required delivery date is actually what won us the business with this first-time customer,” said James Maisel, Managing Member & Visionary.

Tri Tech designed the system with bus connections from a 3,000-amp molded base circuit breaker to the Maxi-PLS with rigid, tinned copper that maintained the necessary UL-listing for the installation. “Using the Maxi-PLS busbar system allowed us to leverage a horizontal distribution across the motor control center panels to carry the entire load of 3,000 amps,” explained Maisel. “This was critical to the success of the application.” And by using a top horizontal wireway system, Tri Tech was able to develop a fully networked solution for our biofuel customer with all smart devices connected via Ethernet. The wireway structure also created the ideal distribution for arc flash relay, an invaluable tool to protect people and equipment from dangerous arc hazards.

The Results

Tri Tech’s recommendation and implementation of the Rittal integrated solution not only met all of the customer’s safety and specification needs, it also had the availability and flexibility to deliver on time, despite the customer’s reduced schedule. “This was the first time we’d worked with this customer. They were impressed with both the high-quality and ease of installation for the Rittal solution,” Maisel concluded. In the end, it was a win for the customer, as well as for Tri Tech.
